Effects of Shading on the Vegetative Growth of Korean lawngrass (Zoysia japonica Steud .)

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of shading on the establishment and growth of Korean lawngrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) and to examine the effect of different shading levels (0, 35, 55, 75, and 95% of incidental sunlight) on the vegetative growth of Korean lawngrass. Leaves became longer with decreasing light intensity up to 75% shading, but became shorter than control under 95% shading level. Stolon and rhizome growth started to decrease from 55% and 35% shading, respectively. Dry weight decreased under all shade treatments. Shoot and stolon growth was similar to control, and visual quality also was good in 35% shading level. Generally, Korean lawngrass could maintain the satisfactory growth to the extent of 35% shading level.
